From Stone to Glass is the sustainability paradigm project of Jerusalem based designer, Salome Maarek. Identifying that the current methods of dyeing glass can be harmful and unsustainable, Mareek set out to produce a naturally coloured glass, derived from local terrain.
From Stone to Glass project is an innovative technique to colour the glass from a local terrain. Actually, the methods to color the glass are really toxic and not sustainable. The objective is to propose an alternative to the “classical way” of coloration to get a similar result by using sustainable materials. This local glass is sourced from common stone located in Israel.
Salome Maarek, Jerusalem based designer, transforms stones to glass, celebrating both sustainability and nature's beauty.
Jerusalem-based designer Salome Maarek transforms local stones from different regions of Israel into naturally colored glass pieces for her recent works. ‘From Stones to Glass’ epitomises sustainability and natural beauty. Throughout the project, the designer ensured that the life cycle of each final glass piece is sustainable, and that the embodied energy is kept to a minimum. From gathering the rocks, to analysing and processing them, to then finally refining the glass, the entire process was carefully planned to have as little environmental impact as possible. The project, which took two years to complete, is now available for use as jewelry pieces or for industrial production.
From Stones to glass: a jewel from the earth The rock, a local identity From Stones to Glass: nature embellishes
A stone, a glass, a shade of color... One message: local. My research project consisted in gathering stones from different regions of Israel, in order to create naturally colored glasses.
The From Stone to Glass project is a new innovative technique to colouring glass. The objective is to propose an alternative to the “classical way” of colouration.
Just like with clothing, it’s also too easy to take for granted how glass-based products can actually be harmful to the environment in the long run. While glass itself is made from sustainable resources, the dyes used to give them vibrant colors are toxic to the environment. Even worse, colored glass can’t easily be recycled because of that mixture and because it’s nearly impossible to bring the material back to its natural transparent state. To make decorative glass truly sustainable, a new method of coloring glass needs to be developed, and one designer embarked on a journey of two years and hundreds of miles to come up with a solution that matches Haute Joaillerie in elegance but surpasses it in sustainability.
From stone to glass, a naturally colored glass – With the From Stone to Glass project, Salomé Maarek wanted to create a naturally colored glass with local resources. The designer considered using fruits and vegetables to naturally color the material, however it was found that this would have a harmful ecological impact.
As we have already seen recently , at the moment, the production of glass is not as sustainable as it seems and, likewise, the methods of coloring this material, since, once colored, it cannot be recycled as it is not possible to return it to its transparent state. With the project From Stone to Glass , Salomé Maarek , a student at the Bezalel Academy, wants to create a natural method of coloring glass , which uses local resources.
A stone, a glass, a shade of color… One message : local. From north to south, east to west, stones contained a gradation of colors, new textures, bubbles and other surprises.
Eindhoven 2022 // Salome Maarek At the design week in Eindhoven, Salome Maarek, a student in the ceramic and glass design department at Bezalel, presented a project that presents a new technique she developed for painting glass, in which she uses pigments she created from stones she collected around the country.
From Stone to Glass project is a new innovative technique to colouring the glass. The objective is to propose an alternative to the “classical way” of coloration. Actually, the methods to color the glass are really toxic and not sustainable. The purpose is to create a technique to get a similar result as the classical way but using sustainable materials. This glass is sourced from stone located in Israel. From north to south, from east to west, the colors of the stones change, become more nuanced, and produce textures that give the glass a different appearance.

Colored glasses often contain polluting metal oxides. So why not imagine creating glass with naturally tinted minerals, like certain rocks ?

From Stone to Glass explores an innovative technique of colouring glass from a local terrain. Salomé Maarek transforms stones from different regions of Israel into naturally coloured glass pieces. The project proposes a sustainable method of colouring glass as an alternative to more commonly used toxic processes.
The Pere Preciuse project is an innovative fashion and jewelry venture that incorporates the use of “From Stone to Glass,” a groundbreaking glass coloring technique. Unlike traditional methods, which are highly toxic and environmentally unsustainable, “From Stone to Glass” offers a sustainable alternative. The project aims to provide a similar aesthetic outcome to the classical approach, but with the use of eco-friendly materials. The locally-sourced glass is derived from common stones found in Israel.
